Solar water heating is a reality in Canada. Evacuated Thermal Tube technology has been used in many countries around the world for over twenty years to heat water economically. This has become the solar product of choice for cost and environment conscientious consumers.

How they work

Evacuated thermal tubes are generally about 2” in diameter and about 5’ long. The outside is a clear glass tube which houses a dark coloured glass tube. The space between the two tubes is a vacuum, which acts like a thermos. This vacuum is an excellent insulator, keeping the heat in and allowing the system to boil water, even in minus 30 conditions. A copper pipe inside the glass tube contains a small amount of fluid. The sunshine causes the liquid to boil. The steam rises to the top where a manifold containing food grade antifreeze and water then transfers the heat to your Solar hot water tank.

These units typically come in 12, 20 and 32 tube designs with the larger unit able to produce enough hot water for 2-3 people for normal household use. This provides hot water for showers, laundry and dishes. It will produce less in winter due to shorter days.

Add on extra units and you can cut your house and pool heating bills as well.

You may be familiar with the old style of flat plate collector solar water heating. Flat plate collectors, which are a series of pipes in a black panel, are mounted on a roof. Water is circulated through to collect the heat.

Industries improve over time. Computers are a good example of how a product becomes more productive yet costs less to buy. Over the last twenty years, Evacuated thermal tubes have also been improved.

It is important to know the differences in products. Some have single insulated manifolds instead of double insulated. Some designs still have to be turned for the optimum sun position, unlike newer units, which by design, are continually at an optimum angle to the sun.
